Vinbeskrivelse

Rondevlei Chenin blanc 2021

Sidste skud på stammen fra David & Nadia, en ny enkeltmarks Chenin Blanc som allerede har taget anmelderne med storm.

“A new addition to David and Nadia Sadie’s line up of single vineyard, old-vine Chenin Blancs, this used to be part of the Aristargos blend. Picked four times over a fortnight for complexity and to retain acidity in a wine that can be “oily”. Beeswax and honeysuckle aromas segue into a palate of marmalade, citrus and salty minerality framed by concrete eggs and old wood.”

As vineyards go, Rondevlei sounds relatively unexciting – it’s a flat, 1.7-hectare parcel on red sand, but the wine it produces is thrilling. Made with five different components, it’s what David Sadie calls a “salt-driven” Chenin Blanc, with a noticeably maritime influence. Sappy and slightly ferrous, it has notes of kelp and citrus and a focused, tangy, engaging finish. 2024-29

This Chenin blanc vineyard was planted in 1984 (the same year that both of us were born). It is the first time that we release a single vineyard wine from this vineyard situated in an arid plain in the Swartland. It is the only double row vineyard that we work with. A quarter of the wine was aged in a concrete egg. The wine also qualifies for the Certified Heritage Vineyards (CHV) seal and forms part of the Old Vine Project (OVP).
